Birds of Paradise is based on a French or English furnishing fabric from about 1829-30. The colourful and exotic pattern is reminiscent of a period when Indian chintz was discovered by spice merchants and became popular in European interiors and fashion. The V&A's textile archive holds a vast collection of fabrics in many pattern and styles from across the centuries and many parts of the world. The bedlinen design recreates the look and feel of the 19th century original in the archive and includes a duvet cover and panel print oxford pillowcase, a housewife pillowcase in a small floral co-ordinate, quilted throw and one size of curtains. A wonderful accessory cushion featuring an intricately embroidered bird perched on a branch completes the range.
