The Urchin Pendant Light is inspired by the empty shells of the Sea Urchin 'Echinus esculentus', a creature who inhabits the Cornish coast line. Designed to completely conceal the bulb, the spherical form of this wooden pendant light is made up from steam-bent strips of sustainably sourced wood and held by laser cut birch plates. The formation of the strips carefully conceals the light bulb whilst creating a beautiful lighting effect. Hand crafted in Cornwall, England. Growing up surrounded by the natural beauty of Exmoor, England, Tom Raffield was inspired at an early age by the unspoiled landscapes of his environment. Whilst studying at art school he developed an innovative steaming method which allowed him to manipulate a variety of wood types and bring his stunning designs to life. These contemporary pieces are heavily influenced by forms found in nature, and are constructed using sustainable materials and ecologically sound practices. Handmade in Cornwall, England, Tom Raffield's exquisite collection of lighting and furniture offers a remedy to the current throw-away culture, and re-introduces the concept of the cherished collectable.
