Born in Russia in 1903, Rothko and his family emigrated to the US in 1913, fleeing violence against the Jews. Early figurative works reflect a preoccupation with political themes, as well as an interest in European Modernism developed as a student of Max Weber in New York. Paintings dating from Rothko's time with Adolph Gottlieb and “The Ten”, in the mid 1930s show increased simplification of form. This ultimately led to Rothko's turn to complete abstraction after the Second World War, which he practiced until his tragic suicide in 1970. Today, Rothko is regarded as one of the most significant American Abstract Expressionist painters of the 20th century and a chief inspirer of colour field painting. His abstract paintings translate beautifully into art prints for the home.
