this beautiful swing coat is made using the pintuck shibori dying technique. similar to tie dye 'shibori' is the japanese term for dying a pattern into fabric. to make this shirt thin thread is delicately woven through the fabric and pulled tight to make tiny pleats. the fabric is then wound around a large tapered pole which is lifted into the vat of dye. the dye does not penetrate through the pleats so once the fabric has dried the thread can be removed revealing an intricate and irregular pattern that is slightly unique every time.
